Aswan

Never thought to do this, but I took two pictures of Aswan, the Nile cataracts, which must have been hell for Egyptian vessels to get past, e.g. Hatshepsut's exploring fleet, on the left. The Google map aerial image shows a ton of islands in the Nile. A real maze to get through. The same view also shows a lot of changes since I was there 10 years ago. Anyway, I stitched them together for this panorama.

The Aswan Museum, and there they are again, the baboons. I have to read about their meaning.

A closer look at part of the Nile Cataracts. In the distance on the island there are ancient tombs.

Which brings me to the waterfront where tourists are embarking on a tour of, I believe, Elephant Island, where some of those tombs are. I did not know and did not schedule for that.

And off they go

You can see the many tombs here that remind me a bit of the Bene Hasan tombs at Minya, i.e. a high ridge with doors.

I settled for lunch on a floating restaurant and then got ready for a long train ride back to Cairo. Next time I might fly.

I like the Egyptian bread and hot from the oven it's even better. The first evening I looked for people with bread bags and then found this bakery in an alley.

What is it with me and bakers? From Egypt to Syria to Afghanistan, they treat my like their favorite guest. Here, I was just going to pick some breads like the rest of the customers, when I was waved off and taken to the freshest bread, just out of the oven. Perfect!
